I am a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  I earned my B.A. in English Literature at Oberlin College, and my M.A. (Economics) and Ph.D. (Sociology) at the University of Michigan.

I was born and grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Despite being a native Midwesterner, I have lived in Melbourne, Australia for two years (where I learned to play Australian Rules Football) and in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for two and a half years (where I taught English at the University of Gadjah Mada).

Current research projects:

1) Social mobility, labor markets and working poverty in the United States.

2) The economic and social impact of globalization in Indonesia and Mexico.

3) Immigration and the labor market for Hispanic immigrants in North Carolina.
